Another Milestone for Blockchain at UWC
The University of the Western Cape once again proved that innovation thrives on campus with the successful hosting of Stellar UWC 2025 and the official launch of the UWC Stellar Blockchain Chapter. What began as a bold idea to bring blockchain to students became a vibrant, sold-out gathering where technology met creativity and purpose.
Highlights of the Day
Morning Momentum
Prof Clement Nyirenda opened the event with a motivating welcome.
Keynotes set the pace:
- Mrs Yaliwe Mlambo explored “The Future of Money in Southern Africa.”
- Mr Mihlali Kota inspired students with “How to Build on Stellar Students Leading Africa’s Web3 Future.”
Participants then dove into hands-on learning, choosing between a Security Research & Bug Bounty talk by Mr Ashiq Amien, a Blockchain Fundamentals workshop led by Mr Thandile Nododile, or an Immersive Tech with Blockchain session with Mr Thomas Abongile.
Ideathon@UWC
Building Financial Access and Trust with Stellar
The centerpiece of the day was the Ideathon, launched at 10:45 AM at Cams building Lab D.
Open to students from Finance, Computer Science, IT, Mathematics and related fields, the challenge offered mentorship throughout the day before teams pitched their solutions.
The creativity and practical impact of the student teams impressed the jury and audience alike.
Afternoon Energy
- Expert panels examined blockchain, cybersecurity, and immersive technology, and debated “Africa’s Web3 Future Opportunities & Challenges.”
- Mr Iggy Bafana showcased “Instant Payments Everywhere and Anywhere,” bringing fintech to life.
- The Ideathon pitch session closed with the announcement of winners and reflections from Mr David Malope.
UWC Women in Computer Science, Funti3r, UWC IT Society, and GKSS-UWC led a strong volunteer effort, with special recognition to Ms Kessel Okinga-Koumou, Mr. Wisani Hlangwane, Mr. David Malope, Dr. Andre Henney, and every speaker, mentor and student who made the day seamless and inspiring.
Stellar UWC 2025 reaffirmed that blockchain, cybersecurity, and immersive technology are not distant concepts, they’re opportunities students can harness today.
