GKSS-UWC Tech Talk with Tebogo Moloi
On 10 September 2025, the Geekulcha Student Society at the University of the Western Cape (GKSS-UWC) hosted an inspiring Tech Talk that brought together GKSS chapters from across South Africa for an evening dedicated to cloud engineering and its impact on the future of technology.
The session opened with Chantell Jembere, who welcomed attendees and introduced representatives from collaborating GKSS chapters including GKSS-UNISA, GKSS-Midrand, GKSS-KZN, GKSS-Univen, GKSS-CPUT and GKSS-TUT.
Each chapter briefly shared their roles, underscoring the collaborative spirit that drives student innovation.
The highlight of the event was a presentation by Tebogo Moloi, Head of Cloud Engineering at Standard Bank.
Tebogo began by challenging students to view their education as a toolkit for critical thinking, problem-solving, and lifelong learning. He emphasized that cloud infrastructure is a key enabler for Africa’s connectivity and economic growth, creating opportunities for innovation and employment especially for youth.
Tebogo explored how cloud engineering is transforming the financial sector as e-commerce and digital transactions accelerate.
He explained that traditional banks must adapt quickly:
- On-demand infrastructure helps manage peak transactions.
- Artificial intelligence supports hyper-personalized customer experiences.
- Cybersecurity becomes even more critical as interactions move online.
Addressing South Africa’s POPI Act, Tebogo described the complexities of data jurisdiction and the need for businesses to replicate cloud solutions across regions to stay compliant. He highlighted the growing importance of individuals managing their own data privacy as AI and digital services evolve.
Tebogo encouraged students to focus on critical thinking, adaptability, and deep technical understanding of cloud technologies, noting that global investments from AWS, Azure, Oracle, and GCP are creating strong demand for cloud engineers and tech entrepreneurs.
An engaging Q&A followed, with questions on data ownership, open banking, and the future of AI.
Student Mpho Modise added valuable insights on building resilience and professional networks early in one’s career, reinforcing the evening’s theme of continuous learning.
This Tech Talk is part of the GKSS-UWC Tech Talk Series, which explores key areas of technology through expert-led sessions.
The event also served as preparation for the upcoming Intervarsity Hackathon, showcasing the collaborative strength of GKSS chapters in driving innovation.
GKSS-UWC extends heartfelt thanks to Tebogo Moloi for his time and expertise, and to our partner societies and fellow GKSS chapters for making this event a success.
